According to the literature, the relationship between Japan and Vietnam dates back to the ”Nara” period. In the 17th century, trade between the two countries began through the so-called “Shu-In Ship Trade”. At that time, a Japanese town was formed in the central port town of “Hoi An”, and it is said more than 1,000 people lived in its heyday. And silver and copper were mainly exported from Japan, while silk, sugar and incense were imported from Vietnam.

Until now, we have been conducting business centered on trade, following the history of the "INISHIE (meaning ”old")”.

The number of Japanese residents in Vietnam is 22,125 (2018), more than 28% over the previous year, and the growth rate is the largest in Asia. The number of Japanese companies is 1,848 (2018). In particular, the number of members of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in “Ho Chi Minh City” is 1,008 (September 2019), the third largest in the world after “Shanghai” and “Bangkok”. The number of Vietnamese residents in Japan is 371,755 (2019).

The relationship between Japan and Vietnam has been described as a "natural alliance" that is unique in the world. As you know, Vietnam has been restructuring or strengthening its international competitiveness since 1986 based on the “Doi Moi (meaning “renovation”)” route, which is based on the “introduction of a market economy system” and “open-door policy”. Vietnam was keenly interested in Japan, which was rebuilt and became an economic power after “World War II”, and decided to actively learn from Japan. And they enthusiastically took advantage of the facilities and equipment provided in Japan by Japanese ODA and worked to acquire the technology. Vietnamese people have a high absorption capacity and have achieved high results in technology transfer from Japan in support of human development or infrastructure development. Above all, the qualities and efforts of the Vietnamese people, such as a high sense of mission for their own development, the cherishing of goods, and the patience to cope with difficulties, have linked Japanese ODA to economic growth. The policy has achieved the highest GDP growth rate in the ASEAN region with 6.21% in 2016, 6.81% in 2017, 7.1% in 2018, and 7.02% in 2019 in the last few years alone. . And, as their income increased due to the strong curiosity and high economic growth of the Vietnamese people, their preferences became diverse. As a member of ASEAN, Vietnam has concluded FTAs with Japan, China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the Japan-Vietnam Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), Chile and the Eurasian Economic Union (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc.), South Korea, EU, and also participate in CPTPP. At present, the country is actively promoting free trade policies such as negotiations with RCEP. As a result, foreign investment and other factors have increased along with the expansion of trade, and it is estimated that growth will continue to be stable until 2050, making it a very promising country.

We will continue to grow by strengthening our management structure and conducting business in consideration of the relationship between Japan and Vietnam and future needs, and will be a bridge between the two countries of Japan and Vietnam.
